Support
Educational Initiatives of the LWV-TC The
League of Women Voters of Tompkins County is having a
fund
drive to support our educational initiatives in the community
and we need your help. We
do not have a paid staff to accomplish our many projects.
Still, to run our
organization we have to raise funds. For about 30 years we
sold UNICEF Christmas and Holiday cards. For many years we assisted
Cornell with its student elections in the fall and spring. Unfortunately
we lost these two sources of revenue to commercial marketing and
computerization. Instead
of raising funds every year, we decided to open an account
with the Community Foundation of Tompkins County. We are
very pleased to report that a long time supporter of our
League has offered to match up to $15,000 of contributions
made to this fund. We
need your help! Click
here for additional information on contributing to the LWVTC
Education Fund.

Your Senators to Support CEDAW The
Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW) is the most comprehensive international treaty promoting
the advancement of women worldwide. It establishes a legal framework
to which all governments must adhere, to ensure the equality
of women in various areas of life including politics, law, employment,
education, health care, commerce and domestic relations. The
United States remains the only democracy in the world that has
not ratified the CEDAW Treaty, putting our country in the dishonorable
company of states such as Iran, Somalia and Sudan. Click

Change Passes in the House, Moves on to the Senate The House of Representatives has made history by passing the American
Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 by a margin of just 219-212. The bill is
the first
to try to curb the greenhouse gases that cause climate change and will
help move the U.S. into a clean energy economy. Click

The bill made it through the Labor Committee but we

Take Action Today Regarding Greenhouse Gas Emissions The
League of Women Voters is asking you to join us in urging Senators
Gillibrand and Schumer to strongly support and work for firm
caps on greenhouse gas emissions. The consensus on the scientific
data is that climate change is a clear and present danger for
public health, the environment and the economy of the Earth. Recently,
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Lisa Jackson,
issued a proposed ruling that global climate change endangers
American
health and well being. This should lead the way to the establishment
of emissions standards for the largest polluters, e.g. new vehicles
and new coal fired plants. In addition, the American Clean Energy
and Security Act is making its way through the House of Representatives.
Now is the time for citizens to speak out in support for strong
caps on greenhouse gas emissions. To take action by
sending a letter to Senators Gillibrand and Schumer, please click
