The House of Representatives is poised for a critical vote on vital climate change legislation. America's Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) is slated to hit the House floor the week of June 22.

Please contact your Representative immediately and ask him or her to strengthen and support the ACES legislation.

The bill sets up the framework needed to curb global warming and transition America to a clean energy economy. Unfortunately some Representatives have already aligned themselves with special interest groups that have tried to weaken the bill at every turn.

For the first time, the legislation sets a cap on the greenhouse gases that are causing climate change. The bill aims to reduce global warming emissions from capped sources by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 and by 83 percent by 2050. ACES would establish minimum targets for building codes that will save consumers $25 billion a year by 2030. Funds will be provided to state and local governments to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

With the need for strong climate change legislation growing every day, it is imperative for Congress to stand up against special interests that have worked to weaken the bill. The final bill should include effective energy efficiency and renewable energy standards, create and support green jobs, and preserve the EPA's ability to ensure that polluters such as power plants and refineries meet up-to-date emissions standards.

The decisions being made now on this legislation will have long-term effects on how we combat climate change in the future. Any weakening now will seriously impair our ability to control the harmful effects of climate change in decades to come.
